Hike On Your Site Takes Off

The second annual Hike On Your Site was a great success this year.

An offshoot of Hike for Hospice, the memorial walk and fundraiser for Victoria Hospice, Hike On Your Site enables seniors with mobility issues to participate in the popular event by walking on location at their retirement communities.

Thirteen retirement communities participated this year; up from five last year.

This year, approximately one-third of the total funds raised for Hike for Hospice came from Hike On Your Site retirement communities – a grand total of $19,600!

Hike On Your Site participants not only raised funds and awareness for Victoria Hospice, they engaged in physical activity and built a sense of community and purpose with their fellow residents. They were also very creative in their fundraising activities. They had ice cream socials, jeans days, pizza days, barbeques, raffles, 50/50 draws, duck racing, horse racing, happy hours, teas, plus one resident artist painted a picture for auction.

More highlights:

•    The oldest walker, at 100 years young, was Dot Larsen (pictured above) of Legion Manor Victoria.
•    Leyla, the five-year-old daughter of a staff member at Berwick House, was the youngest walker.
•    Residents at The Wellesley won the prize for Top Fundraising Community, raising $4,200.
