When & How to Register
Typically, anyone who has been given an approximate prognosis of 6-12 months to live can register with Victoria Hospice and may register before actually requiring any Victoria Hospice services.
Registration does not require the immediate use of services, however. Many people register so that when the time comes that they would like to use the services of Victoria Hospice, they are able to do so without delay.
A person is eligible to register with Victoria Hospice services if:
- they live in an area of Greater Victoria served by Victoria Hospice
- the intent of their care is palliative (i.e. primarily comfort-oriented)
- their family physician agrees that Victoria Hospice services are appropriate and desirable
- they are willing to accept added care in their home from community support systems including Home & Community Care Nursing and Community Health Care Workers if necessary
- they are currently residing at home or in an assisted-living complex
Registration Starts With a Telephone Call
A phone call to the Vancouver Island Health Authority (VIHA) Health Unit begins the process of contact and registration with Home & Community Care and Victoria Hospice. VIHA is committed to supporting those who face end-of-life challenges. Especially important is the partnership that VIHA shares locally with Victoria Hospice in providing palliative care to people in the comfort of their own homes.

If you do not have a Home & Community Care Nurse at this time, you can ask your family physician to request a Home & Community Care Nursing referral for Victoria Hospice registration.
Your Home & Community Care Nurse will arrange a visit with you at home to provide more detailed information about the services that Victoria Hospice offers. After registering with Victoria Hospice, you can access our services by requesting them – often through your Home & Community Care Nurse.
